Fort Snelling Chapter, NSDAR, Welcomes You!

On behalf of the Fort Snelling Chapter,  National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR),  members we welcome you! Our chapter was organized in 1907 as the Rebecca Sherman Chapter, NSDAR.  In December 1935, the chapter was renamed the Fort Snelling Chapter, NSDAR. Our members come from Hastings and its surrounding areas.

We are a non-profit, non-political women’s service organization that values education, historic preservation and patriotism.

About Our Chapter

Fort Snelling Chapter, NSDAR, is one of the Minnesota State Society Daughters of the American Revolution that was organized on April 8, 1907, as the Rebecca Sherman Chapter, NSDAR, by the organizing regent.

Our chapter currently has 47 members who proudly serve the Hastings area through service to local communities that promote historic preservation, patriotism and education.

We Promote Historic Preservation, Patriotism and Education

Our chapter supports national and state historic preservation projects as well as supports our community in the preservation of historical artifacts.

Our chapter supports national and state patriotism projects as well as supports our local veterans and hosts celebratory events such as the Fourth of July and Veterans Day.

Our chapter supports national and state education projects as well as works with our community through our projects to support education via scholarships and educational events.

We Make a Difference in Our Communities

Historic Preservation

Our chapter has partnered with the Hastings Area Historical Society in caring for the abandoned Oakwood Cemetery that they voluntarily care for. We have donated funds, flowers and plants, and have planted, weeded, and cleaned the gravestones of the veterans buried there. Our chapter is also making stepping stones with the names and dates of veterans known to be buried there but have no gravestones. These gravestones will be placed between the plants along the entrance of the cemetery. We are also helping to locate the burial records to petition the Veterans Administration for headstones for them.

Patriotism

We send birthday cards monthly to our local veterans at the Hastings Veterans Home and also adopt several for Christmas. Along with their gifts we make fleece blankets for them. Once a month we invite the veterans to come to the Family Search Center to help them with their family history. Yearly we present the DAR Gold Medal to a Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadet at the University of Minnesota and the DAR Bronze Medal to a Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) cadet at Woodbury High School. We partnered with the Vietnam 50th Anniversary Commemoration by presenting the 50th Anniversary pins and certificates to the Vietnam veterans at the Hastings Veterans Home. We partnered with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 100th Anniversary by planting a Never Forget Garden which we continue every spring.

Education

Our chapter members attend local events where we provide constitutional literature and offer selected local school students with scholarships and DAR Good Citizens Awards.  We are also provided the opportunity to donate to DAR Schools.

Become a Member of DAR

Today’s Daughters of the American Revolution is a vibrant service organization for women over the age of 18 who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolutionary War. In October 2019, DAR surpassed one million women who have joined the DAR since its founding in 1890. By subscribing to the DAR Today podcast, you can learn more about members’ activities, Patriot histories, current topics and more.

Minnesota Daughters come from all over our great state and beyond. They are young women who join to honor a family member, older women who enjoy genealogical research in their retirement years, professional women interested in connecting with other women in the community where they live, and others. Whatever your reason for joining, we invite you to connect, encourage you to apply and welcome you to our organization.
